Hari Hara Veera Mallu movie review: Pawan Kalyan shines

Pawan Kalyan’s Film is No Chhaava, Just One Elevation Scene After Another

Hari Hara Veera Mallu movie review: Pawan Kalyan shines ...

Rating: 2.5/5

The much-awaited period drama Hari Hara Veera Mallu with Pawan Kalyan tries to blend history, heroism, and rebellion, but it feels like just a string of elevation scenes with no real narrative. While the production scale is very, very grand and the star-power: immense, the execution is anything but fine.

Critical Reviews
India Today observes that the film is a brave attempt at mixing a heist and history with visual flair; weak VFX and a thin script drag this film down. Pawan Kalyan brings to the film star power, but the film does not really meaningfully use it.

The Indian Express terms it as a "long, loud misfire." Despite the rich historical backdrop, it falls to clichés of an outdated story and seems glum of emotional appeal.

Hindustan Times says every scene here raises the bars visually but lacks narrative depth; the VFX fall short of expectations and the story appears hollow.

GreatAndhra calls it "a dull tale, epic fail," attacking the screenplay and execution and asserting the movie turns into a spectacle almost completely devoid of substance.

123telugu.com gave a rather balanced review, calling it a one-timer for all Pawan Kalyan fans. The first half and Pawan Kalyan's charisma stand out, whereas the rest of the film falters on pacing and the climax.

Gulte and CineJosh mentioned that the film starts well but loses track midway, especially with uneven visual treatment and story-telling in its second half.

Audience Reaction
Netizens were divided in opinions. According to an admirer, "Very good first half…Keeravani's score is the heart of the film. Somewhat okay film with bad VFX."
Another viewer gladly commented: "Painful second half. Pawan Kalyan lost his skill in acting and aura."

Box Office Response
The film went on to become a huge opening and collected almost Rs. 60 Crores on Day 1. Big fandom for Pawan Kalyan and hype around his comeback ensured an unparalleled turnout. It is also said that a sequel titled Hari Hara Veera Mallu 2: Yuddhabhoomi is already in the pipeline.

Strengths and Weaknesses
It is Pawan Kalyan's punchy screen presence and the drum-beating background score of MM Keeravani that form this film's major strengths. The visuals and stark art direction sometimes keep one interested. On the other hand, the screenplay is void of emotions and characterizations that give the story any semblance of originality. The near-constant slow-motion entries and stylized action all serve to detract from the story.

The VFX, especially in the stronger phases of the second half, look rushed and underwhelming. Other than the lead, characters barely get any development, and so emotional stakes never come through.

Final Verdict
Style, lacking substance, is what Hari Hara Veera Mallu is all about. It is a film designed to glorify its lead. Pawan Kalyan's fans may enjoy the fun ride; those seeking a deep, well-crafted historical drama may find themselves disappointed.
